Why was I prescribed Jewel?
Why am I being prescribed Jewel?
Your healthcare provider may prescribe Jewel if your condition places you at high risk for sudden cardiac arrest due to life-threatening heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. Jewel can detect and respond to these life-threatening arrhythmias to save your life.
What is sudden cardiac arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, and blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. When this occurs, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can lead to death.
What does Jewel do?
Jewel is designed to monitor the heart’s signals for specific life-threatening heart rhythms that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart’s electrical system stops functioning correctly. This type of heart condition can be treated with an electrical shock (called a defibrillating shock), which can restore the heart to normal function. Jewel automatically detects and treats these life-threatening heart rhythms to restore the heart back to a normal rhythm.
Living with Jewel
Jewel is designed to be applied directly to your skin via adhesive patches on the upper right chest and lower left torso to continuously monitor your heart.
During your time wearing Jewel, you will receive:
Supplies delivered directly to you from Element Science
On-going on-demand support from the Element Science team
An optional mobile app that allows you to check Jewel’s status and informs your physician should you experience a cardiac arrest
Online videos that provide step-by-step guidance on how to use and care for your Jewel
Once your healthcare provider determines that it’s safe for you to discontinue using Jewel, just send Jewel back to us in the packaging provided.
Family & caregivers
We understand that it can be challenging to worry about a family member at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. With Jewel, your loved one is never alone. We encourage family members and caregivers to read and understand the materials that come with Jewel.
In the event a shockable rhythm is detected, Jewel will:
Alert the wearer that an abnormal heart rhythm has been detected.
(Once alerted, the wearer can cancel a shock if it is not needed.)
Deliver an electric shock to bring the heart back to normal rhythm.
Instruct bystanders to immediately call 911.
Send details about the detection and treatment to your loved one’s care provider.
Who is right for Jewel?
The Jewel wearable patch cardioverter defibrillator is indicated for patients 18 years of age and older who are at risk for sudden cardiac arrest and are not candidates for or refuse an implantable defibrillator. It can also be used as a transitional therapy as you await long-term treatment.
There are two heart conditions that lead to many cases of sudden cardiac arrest: coronary heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
Coronary heart disease, also called coronary artery disease, is the most common cause, resulting in around 75% of all sudden cardiac arrests.
Cardiomyopathy can cause the heart muscle to become enlarged, thick, or stiff, making it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. 15% of all sudden cardiac arrests are the result of cardiomyopathy.
Other risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest
Drugs and medication
Genetic disorders
Alcohol use
Electrocution
Trauma, injury, or
infection of the heart
Electrolyte imbalance
